MMV loses a dear colleague and friend

It is with a great sadness that we announce the death of our dear colleague and friend, Ian Bathurst.

28 Jun 2011

Ian was admitted to hospital in Austria on Friday and passed away on Sunday 26th of June 2011 at mid-day.

Born and raised in Christchurch, New Zealand, Ian completed his studies in the UK, obtaining a PhD in Biochemistry from the University of Leeds. Following a successful career in both academia and industry, he joined the MMV team in 2004, as the Director of Drug Discovery.

As one of the first members of MMV’s Drug Discovery team, Ian was instrumental in helping to establish MMV’s networks and early-stage projects. He ensured projects ran smoothly, with good humor and openness to new ideas and inspiration. He has been an invaluable member of the MMV team and a cornerstone to the discovery team. He will be sorely missed, but always remembered for his passion and commitment to MMV’s work.

Our heartfelt condolences go out to his family, especially his children, Kirsten and Steven, and his wife Elfie.

His family has kindly requested that in lieu of flowers donations may be made to MMV. You can do so by contacting MMV directly (info [at] mmv.org) or via the details in the attached message.
