The Ian Bathurst Sponsorship Programme

The Bathurst family and MMV join forces to set up a programme to support scientists from malaria-endemic countries.

07 Jul 2011

Following the recent loss of our dear colleague Ian Bathurst, his family has kindly asked that, in lieu of flowers, donations be made to MMV.

Working together, MMV and the Bathurst family have decided to set up a Sponsorship Programme in Ian’s memory. Donations made to the Programme will be used to support scientists from malaria-endemic countries to attend international scientific meetings focusing on antimalarial drug discovery.

Ian Bathurst dedicated his career to drug discovery, particularly in the field of malaria. He had a passion for investigating natural products for their antimalarial potential and dreamt of spending his retirement in Africa helping to train scientists in malaria-endemic countries.

Although he is now no longer with us, to help make his dream a reality, MMV will match the amount received and use the funds to assist scientists involved in antimalarial drug discovery from endemic countries to attend relevant international meetings. The programme will thus help strengthen scientific capability in these countries and spur the discovery of new antimalarials.

We would like to thank you for your generosity in helping to make Ian's dream a reality. Donations for the Ian Bathurst Sonsorship Programme were accepted up until the end of 2011.
