Malaria Day in Americas: Supporting countries to eliminate relapsing malaria

Elisa Vidal

Malaria remains prevalent in many Latin American countries. The predominant parasite species there is Plasmodium vivax. Each vivax infection can lead to multiple relapses, as a form of this parasite (hypnozoites) can remain in a person’s liver after successful blood-stage treatment, causing relapses and disease transmission.

In this video, Elisa Vidal, MMV's Regional Advisor for Latin America talks about her work in supporting countries in the region to eliminate Plasmodium vivax malaria by improving access to a radical cure.
