This sold out concert organized by Youssou N’Dour, featured guests Peter Gabriel, Neneh Cherry, Gilberto Gil, Tiken Jah Fakoly, Anggun, Kassav, Rokia Traoré, Patti Austin, Manu Katché, David Rhodes, Amadou & Mariam, Axelle Red and the Swiss musician Stephan Eicher. The concert took place on Saturday night, 8 October 2005 at the Arena in Geneva, Switzerland to raise awareness about malaria on the occasion of the United Nations’s 60th anniversary.
The concert raised enough money to buy 50,000 bed nets. Those of us who had the privilege of attending enjoyed fantastic music and a surprise appearance by Kofi Annan. While fans chanted, "Kofi, Kofi" - the Secretary General of the United Nations told the crowd that the UN was everyone, the whole world and not just the "bureaucracy". To loud applause he left the audience with the message that together the programme to fight malaria and poverty can be realized.
For those living in Switzerland, the concert will be rebroadcast by the TSR on 22 October.
Roll Back Malaria
song written by Youssou N’Dour
Fight malaria. It’s so serious. Clean up your area. Keep out mosquitoes.
Fight malaria. It’s so serious. Clean up your area. Roll Back Malaria.
Don’t give them places or even chances to give a bite. Keep out mosquitoes.
Don’t give them places or even changes to give a bite. Roll Back Malaria.
